Tripod Free Hosting Closes Down

An email I received from tripod this morning:

Dear User,
As announced on the 26th of November 2008 the portal and webhosting activities of the Lycos Europe GmbH will be discontinued. Unfortunately, the free hosting service Tripod is effected. For this reason we are hereby terminating your Tripod Account as of 15th February 2009. Until the 15th February you can use your Tripod account and your Homepage as usual. After this date we will close your account and delete all your content which was stored on Tripod in accordance with legal requirements. After this date it will be Ãmpossible to view your Homepage in the internet or to do a Backup using FTP from your page because the content will be unrecoverably deleted. That is why we advise you to to backup all necessary data in the near future from your Tripod Account on your hard drive and if wanted to upload it to another homepage provider. Please keep in mind that we do not offer any support for the free homepages neither by phone nor by email for upcoming questions. Because of this reason we created a short description how to backup your data. We regret having to take this step and we want to thank you for your confidence in the past. Currently, we are still working on finding a solution to provide you the service through another provider. If we should succeed in doing so, we will inform you within the next 4 weeks. But as this is currently doubtful, we would like to ask you to assume the end of the service. Despite the sad news we wish you and your family a successful 2009.

For those who read my â€œWhat happened to free web hosting?â€ post from last year, Tripod was one of the few that was actually still around and operating. I guess I spoke too soon though. Although I havenâ€™t used my tripod account in half a decade, itâ€™s still sad to see another iconic 90â€²s free web host close itâ€™s doors.

Die Facebook ding is nogal OK. Kry verlede week uit die bloute ‘n knyp of iets van Dirk wie ek laas in (seker 1981) gesien het. Hy bly al die afgelope 27 jaar in Amerika. Ook vir Barry (vriend van laerskooldae af) raakgeloop. Hy praat nie baie op FB nie, speel meer met sy plaasdiere.Ander Barry lui verlede jaar die klokkie by die hek. Ons het darem al saam gebraai maar moet dit weer doen.

Ek hou van pizza en koop elke nou en dan ‘n rou een by PnP, maak ‘n stukkie warm (bak, kook wat dit ook al genoem wiord) eet dit en los die res in die vrieskas vir later eet. Vannaand sit ek voor die TV en verlang daarna om die pizza te eet.

Ek gaan haal die pizza uit waar ek dit in die yskas gebêre het. Klaar gedink oor hoe warm die oond moet wees en op watter rak ek dit sal sit.

Lekker groen pizza.

Nou gaan ek maar ‘n eier eet.

Vandag ry ek na Pretoria om dokumente te gaan aflewer. My motor se lisensie het einde Mei verval en ek het al probeer om dit te hernu. Randburg, die naaste lisensiekantoor, is partymaal gesluit of blykbaar nie werkend nie – net wanneer ek daar aankom.

Ewenwel, ek is nou baie versigtig met die bestuurdery. Net duskant die T-aansluiting by Kyalami, en na jy dit gesien het is geen verdwynplek in sig nie, sien ek net verkeersbeamptes aan beide kante van die nuwe(r) pad. Ek ry toe maar aan, die pad word vernou na een baan en die motors ry al hoe stadiger.
Hoe nader ek aan die plek kom hoe meer sien ek. Een van daai kameras op pote wat die nommerplaat afneem en, as daar fout met die voertuig (soos uistaande boetes en goeters) is trek ‘n luide stem jou af. Voor my ry ‘n bakkie en ek probeer dit tussen my nommerplaat en die kamera hou. Dit werk egter nie so goed nie.

‘n Beampte wys die bakkie moet aftrek, wat ook gebeur. Nog ‘n beampte kom van links af aangeloop na my motor en beduie maar ek kyk anderpad en “sien” hom nie en hou aan met ry. (O ja, die lense van die ligte agteraan die motor is ook stukkend.) Die beampte draf na die middelmannetjie en spring in ‘n voertuig. Nou is ek darem ‘n entjie verder en draai links by die T. Na die volgende robot is daar ‘n hele klomp motors agter my. Niemand agtervolg my nie. Die beampte het nooit in die voertuig gespring nie. Hy het rustig daarin geklim om iets te doen.

Met die terugkom van Pretoria af kan ek die pad waar ek weer regs moet draai mooi sien toe ek by die bult afkom. Die voertuie vloei goed in Johannesburg se rigting en staan nie soos met die gaan nie. Ek draai my regs draai en hulle staan nog steeds daar. Twee maal gelukkig op dieselfde dag by een padblokkade – ek glo nie. Ek wil sommer self al aftrek om my storie te vertel oor die lisensiekantoor war ek nie gehelp kan word nie. Gelukkig sien ek dat hulle besig is om op te pak. Sjoe!
